A way to clear a gas central heating system
If you need work carried through on your fully pumped gas central heating system you may want to clear the system. To entirely flush the system of slime and contaminants could be one such instance. Flushing your system is something that can be completed by the none expert but competent do it yourself practician.
Whilst there can be a multitude of causes the most frequent is to flush the metal radiators. Before you do anything to the actual metal radiator you should turn off the heating boiler and any gas or electric that supplies the heating boiler. To enable the system to totally clear you will need to see to it that no water is getting in the heating system.
gas heating systems are normally topped up through a header or expansion cystern in the attic. The expansion cylinder uses a ball-valve similar to that in a toilet system. As the water reaches maximum level the ball floats on the surface and shuts the valve. If water level falls the ball, floating on the surface, also falls venting the valve and allowing more water into the central heating system. To fully empty the heating system this top up process will need to be stopped. A good way to do this is to stop the ball moving by binding it to the top of the tank.
When all these precautions have been implemented, you should attach a hosepipe to the part of your metal radiator known as the outlet and run the end of the hose outside. Once you open the outlet valve the water will be able to current through the hose pipe to the external empty. The hose needs to be attached to the lowest point in your heating system which will be one of the ground floor metal radiators. Before you begin any other work on this gas heating system you must now check that all the water has emptied out and no other the water is entering into the heating radiators.
By venting the bleed valves in the radiators on the top level you will help air to enter the gas heating system and accelerate up the Cleaning process. When the water is emptied off you are free to work on your metal radiator.
