Chop down your gas costs
Chop down your gas costs
Trimming gas usage is a popular theme in the papers and TV. energy costs seem as though they will rise for months to come and pruning your central heating system energy consumption can only be a good thing. Whilst gas heating systems have become more cost-efficient in recent years they will often consume up to half of all your gas costs. Below we have listed some ways in which you can take simple actions two lower your modern gas expenses.
Look At where you are using boilers :
Turn off the metal radiator in any rooms which are not used such as the guest room or utility room. Trimming the number of rooms which are actively heated will contract your energy consumption. Check that you also shut the entrance door to the room to prevent air flow and cold draughts.
Use the gas heating system not the fire :
A fire is far less efficient than the heating boiler system. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the chimney to the outside, an electric fire is nowhere near as cost-efficient as the central heating system.
Eliminate drafts with insulation
If you allow chilled draughts to come into your home then you need to pay for more energy to heat this air. The first place to look will be your doors and ensure that any visible gaps are blocked off. There can be gaps between the window and entrance door frames and a wall which are easily sealed with a foam based sealer. These type of gaps happen often in older homes as the foundations settle. The flame from a candle can help you to see invisible draughts as it flickers when they are present.
Don’t turn up the heating, put on more clothes :
If you are cold in the room put on some more clothing before you move to increase the thermostatic temperature. You can save up to tenpercent on your heating costs just by reducing the thermostat by 1°.
Your curtains can help to control temperature :
During the day time if the sun is shining keep the drapes on the sunny side of the house open to heat the inside of your home. Outside temperatures drop at nightime and your house can lose a lot of heat through the windows. Curtains can be an extra form of insulation and this time and cut heat loss if they are closed, this can can save you money in the longer term. The thicker the curtains in the better.
advice around the home :
Some central heating systems have a hot water cylinder and this must be insulated. The hot water cylinder can hold its heat throughout the daytime if insulated making water available for you whenever required.
Putting shiny foil behind radiators could save a large sum each year.
