There are many different types of gas Central Heating Systems available to you. Most of them consist of a set of heating heating radiators, a heating boiler and copper pipework.

Pumped/vented systems are the most common. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System has a feed and expansion tank. Your house gets hot water through the stored hot water tank, it also supplies heat to the radiators. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. The expansion tank is placed at highest spot to help create water pressure. It performs dual functions by providing hot water and heating up the house.
Many homes feature a pumped/vented Central Heating System, particularly the ones constructed several year ago.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. No water tanks are needed for a Sealed system as it is a completely closed setup saving space. There are benefits to have this closed type of system with pipework and tanks being unnecessary.

- loft space is freed up and pipe maintenance is reduced.
- This decreases the chances of a possible leakage.
- The risk of airlocks, corrosion and gunk are reduced because there won’t be any air being taken down into the system through the open holes as the system is sealed.
- Can be flushed out under pressure if needed by the mains water supply.
The sealed Gas Central Heating system is a fully packaged system with all the controls and safety devices already in place. The mains water supplies the water required for the sealed Central Heating system. The pressure of the main water supply benefits the hot water outlets and gives a healthy shower.
Separated from the sealed system by a diaphragm is a pressure vessel, which contains compressed gas; this vessel is responsible for managing variations of pressure in the heating system. If the pressure becomes too high in a sealed Central Heating System; a safety valve will allow water to escape from the system and if the pressure drops too low a valve will open to refill the system with water.
Compared to any other form of heating, Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
